Camel Strings

Towards the Distant Ranges: Oil on Canvas (100cm x 30cm)

The first painting I completed (in 2000) was of a camel, and I've been doing them ever since. The first painting I exhibited was of a camel, and the first painting I sold was of one too . . . and contrary to a friend's pronouncements (thanks, Chris), they are not 'nasty, smelly, spitting things'. Or at least these aren't their primary traits. There's something charismatic about the intelligence and personality of individual camels; that and their gorgeous long lashed eyes and the sheer exotic gorgeousness of the camel string drawing a line through a sunlight desert . . . their survival adaptations are impressive (even though they're unhappy on sand dune slopes), and, while they are considered feral animals in Central Australia and their burgeoning numbers are depleting native vegetation, they seem intricately a part of the landscape somehow.
